Many thousands of years before the establishment of the first known civilizations in Sumeria, humans were crossing the exposed land bridge across the Bering Strait, from Siberia into North America.  These nomadic bands entered a world filled with wildlife on a scale only seen today in populations of African big game.  Just 10,000 to 11,000 years ago, human hunters had a far richer variety of species from which to choose.  There were giant beavers the size of modern bears, giant ground sloths, llamas, antelope, peccaries, camels, horses, tapirs, woolly mammoths, mastodons, lions, and sabre-toothed tigers.
Mammals have lived in North America for approximately 130 million years before the arrival of man.  Starting out as little more than clever rodents, mammals survived the impact event that drove the dinosaurs to extinction 65 million years ago, and grew to domin-
ate the Earth in the great variety of species we see today.
In the last 10,000 years, the areas of modern Canada and the continental United States saw the ex-
tinction of many hundreds of species during the most recent Ice Age.  During this time, North America lost approximately 65-75% of large animal species.  Whether these extinctions were the result of massive climatic changes brought about by asteroid or cometary im-pacts, or particularly violent periods of volcanic activity, is still a matter of debate among scien-
tists.

The survivors of this turbulent period, such as the bison, moose, musk ox, caribou, and grizzly bear, still inhabit the North American wilderness today.  Many can

be found in the Luxor Creek Wilderness, such as the grizzly bear, elk, and Shiras moose, in addition to such species as the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, mountain goats, mule deer, and the predatory species of the wolf, cougar, and black bear.  Luxor Creek Outfitters truly occupies a unique crossroads in the North American animal kingdom.  Choose a species by clicking a button to the left to learn more about these species' biology and behavior, and follow the prompts to learn about  our personally guided expeditions.
